Boat safety for dummies PDF Print E-mail
If you’re in the market for a boat at a show this winter, or just ogling the sleek beauties on display - the boats, not the eye candy hired to get you on board something you can’t afford - it can’t hurt to stop by the Sea Tow Foundation booth to learn something about boating safety. It might save your life.

Last year the Coast Guard reported 688 boating deaths, mostly of drowning, and 3,686 boaters were injured in accidents. The Coast Guard noted that many of the accidents were due to alcohol abuse and most of the fatalities could have been prevented by wearing personal flotation devices.

The foundation is devoted to safety and education. LIBN took you on a cruise with a young  Sea Tow captain in September operating out of Huntington Harbor, part of the incredibly successful “AAA of the water.”

Celebrating 25 years of coming to the aid of boaters in distress, the Southold outfit now has 118 franchises throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Australia and Europe, with more than 160,000 members.

Sea Tow’s nonprofit wing will be at  boat shows from Corpus Christi, Texas to Hartford, Conn.  this coming year, with its “Boating Safety Challenge,” encouraging visitors to check their knowledge of safe boating with tests, contests and prizes.

The challenge kicks off at the grand daddy of them all, The New York National Boat Show Dec. 13-21.
